"I was mugged," Sylvie said. "Well, sort of. But I'm fine. Chester and Familiar saw to that."

Alice's face registered horror. "Honey, you look as if the cats dragged you in. And the floor manager has been looking for you. He's angry. You're more than an hour late, and he's not going to like the way you're looking."

Sylvie shook her head. "I can't help it. I've got to go."

"They're going to fire you," Alice warned.

Sylvie hugged her friend. "So much has happened. I'll fill you in on it all. I just wanted—"

The telephone at the counter rang twice, signaling an outside line. Sylvie felt her heart squeeze. She wanted it to be Hunter. Even though she knew it wasn't, that he was out of her life. The irrational hope that it was him made her heart accelerate.

Alice picked up the line, her gaze shifting to Sylvie. She held out the phone. "It's for you," she said with a smile.

Sylvie took the receiver and spoke into it.

"There's no time for a real apology now. I'll make you one you'll never forget if you give me the chance."

Hunter's voice was the best thing Sylvie had ever heard. She'd intended to stay mad at him the rest of her life. No matter her intentions, she felt her heart melting.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

"I'm at the exchange point. I can't talk long. I just wanted you to know that...that I love you."

She gripped the phone and held it, amazed at the rush of emotion that threatened to overwhelm her. "I love you, too," she whispered. "Where are you?"

"Central Park. Skating rink. I've got two minutes before the exchange. I have to go."

"I'm on my way," Sylvie said. "I have some important news."

"Wait for me at my place," Hunter instructed. "I'll give them the formula, but this isn't over. Just stay at my place where it's safe."

"I can't," Sylvie said, determined to make Hunter believe the evidence she'd turned up. "Hunter, it's Connie. She's behind this. I'm positive."

"Sylvie, my ex-wife is—"

Sylvie didn't give him a chance to defend her. "You just have to trust me on this." Sylvie knew she had to get moving. ‘‘Listen to me. Connie came in the store and she knew all about us. She warned me. Then I found out she lives at Candlewick. She—" Sylvia heard several clicks on the line and then an odd buzzing. "Hunter? Hunter, are you there?"

The line was dead.

Chapter Seventeen

"You've solved the mystery," Alice said, grabbing Sylvie's arm. "So it's the ex-wife."

"She's involved," Sylvie said with certainty. "I just don't know how deeply, but I intend to find out." Sylvie gave her friend a quick hug. "I have to go." The disconnection with Hunter had her extremely worried. It could have been a technology glitch—or it could mean something much worse.

"But—"

Before Alice could offer the protest she'd started, Sylvie took off with a wave and an "I'll be back soon!" She wasn't that far from Central Park. On the way past a Batman display she grabbed a pair of black sneakers that looked as if they'd been designed for space flight.
